Farmland - the new green gold. Hoping for export revenues, Ethiopia’s government leases millions of hectares of farmland to foreign investors. But the dream of prosperity has a dark side where the World Bank plays a very questionable role…

Each year, the Ethiopian government leases millions of hectares of allegedly unused land (the new “green gold”) to foreign investors. But the dream of prosperity has a dark side: forced evictions, lost livelihoods, harsh repression, and a vicious spiral of violence. Contributing to the disaster are the EU, the World Bank and DFID, providing billions of dollars in development money. Meet investors, bureaucrats, persecuted journalists, struggling environmentalists and farmers evicted from their land.
