South African grandmothers create an immense garden to “take control of their food and their futures.”

Created in the dying days of apartheid, the Thinking Garden (“hleketani” in the local xiTsonga language) has become a place where women gather to think about how to affect change. Today, the garden still provides food and opportunities for people, while helping to confront climate change, poverty and HIV/AIDS. Against the backdrop of an epic drought, the film explores what happens when older women take matters into their own hands, and how local action provides vulnerable people a measure of control over their food and future.
