In an Edmonton barber shop, Arab-Canadian men chat and joke about their immigrant experiences

At Jamal’s Eden Barbershop, the customers come in for more than a quick haircut. The men come from differentcultures, religions and social backgrounds, reflecting the complexity of Arab identity – including Christians, Druze, Muslims, both Shia and Sunni, along with secular types. At times serious, but laced with deft humour, their conversations last for hours as they debatecurrent issues. “Simply by coming together in this way, they challenge the whole notion that Arab culture is uniform and threatening.” – Nisreen Baker
