xīn nī 廖芯妮

xīn nī 廖芯妮 (“understanding you”) is an intimate auto-ethnographic portrait expressed through dance and digital technologies. Liaw engages in intergenerational conversations with her family and community to transform the linguistic divide between her Chinese name and its Hakka translation into a space for healing. Drawing on themes of decolonizing queerness to emphasize self-love and self-curiosity, the work explores both physical and technological attachments. Bodies made up of 3D-rendered cultural objects hold space for the stories of Liaw’s elders, while expanding the growing web of her ancestral knowledge.

About the Filmmaker

Jasmine Liaw is an emerging interdisciplinary artist in dance performance, new media art, and experimental film. Bicoastal, she is based in so-called Toronto and Vancouver. Her practice investigates methods of queering diasporic culture through dance-technology. Her work sits with the complexity of her own queerness, biracial identity, and climate anxiety. She is the 2023 Artistic Associate of Chimerik 似不像. She recently completed a two-year artist-in-residence with F-O-R-M Recorded Movement Society’s Technology & Interaction Program. Some of her recent presentations include The Asian Arts & Culture Trust with Holt Renfrew, Gallery 44, Northwest Film Forum, Vector Festival, Pleasure Dome, MPCAS, Charles Street Video and more. Liaw is also a 2023 Emerging Digital Artist Award winner for her experimental film work, xīn nī 廖芯妮.
